After careful deliberation I’ve decided for my first post on this blog, to explain the word “gi” and why it’s a go-to term in my circle of friends. I look at language as a highly malleable art. A word that means one thing to someone, could have a completely different meaning to another. Sometimes new meaning can be given to old words and when used regularly in a social circle the alternate meaning becomes shared. This is how “gi” entered my vocabulary, replacing the name of a robe I wore as a kid in karate class.
Originally airing March 14, 2009 on Saturday Night Live, “Party Guys” quickly became one of my favorite Digital Shorts of all time. It was written by the members of the comedy group Lonely Island, and the talented Bill Hader. “Party Guys” and many other funny videos can be found on their site HERE. All plugs aside, the video is a clever string of language manipulation and the line about the karate gi hanging on the wall instantly made my friends and I adopt the term “look at this gi”.
Eventually we were using the term so much we had to decide on a meaning or risk allowing “gi” to become too powerful. I believe the best way to describe the definition of “gi” would be a non-derogatory version of a “tool”. Or someone who puts too much effort into something, but with comedic intentions or outcomes. Similar to a “dork” or “jackass”.
As far as words go, I feel it’s a keeper. You now have my blessing. Go spread the good word, and I apologize if I’m being a gi.
